The awful was a winged cryptid reportedly sighted in the towns of Richford and Berkshire, Vermont, by several people. The first sighting involved two sawmill workers who were crossing a bridge when they saw the beast glaring menacingly down at them from a rooftop. One of the men was so frightened that he immediately had a heart attack.
The Awful was often described as being similar in appearance to a Griffin with grayish-wings and a 20-foot wingspan. It had a very long, serpentine tail and enormous claws.
